Getting Around
|
In support of our military children we have several ongoing programs and activities in which we all participate. These bring smiles and comfort to each of us, as well as rave reviews from our children.
Pot Luck Dinners We love to eat! When the formal part of the meeting has ended we network with each other and eat. Each meeting is Pot Luck. We ask each Mom to bring a dish to pass. Should you not bring a dish and want to participate we ask a $5.00 donation towards dinner.
Birthday Card Program The month before your child's birthday, please email their name and address to michiganmilitarymoms@hotmail.com, which will be forwarded to the group. Many of us moms send cards out to wish them a wonderful birthday. This has been a great program, and most every soldier when visiting with us, comments on the huge amount of mail they received from us to wish them happiness on their special day. Postage for APO and FPO address is the same cost as any normal stateside address.
Packaging Meetings Approximately once a quarter we package boxes to send to our children. We ask each Mom to bring 15 like items to be placed among the many, many items we have to fill the boxes. The group shops and purchases high cost items such as beef jerky, power bars, phone cards, and other items that are needed and wanted by our troops. The boxes are packaged, custom slips made out, and the boxes are taken to the Post Office and the MMM group pays for the postage to send these boxes. We are always interested in knowing what the troops need currently – feel free to share with us. Click here for more detailed packaging information.
Crafting Meetings Once a quarter we have a meeting that we network together to share and craft. We have a group of knitters that knit Helmet Liners for the troops (instructions available here); we sew HUGS – a fabric strip filled with special beads that are used as ‘coolers’ for our troops; we have an active group decorating quilt squares for Operation Quiet Comfort – a group that supplies each wounded troop with a quilt from home (see Resources page). We try to have other simple crafts for those who are not “crafty” - these items are then used in our packaging to our children – with the exception of the quilts which we pass on to Operation Quiet Comfort to distribute. We are ALWAYS looking for new things to do – your input is needed and wanted. |
